Recently, there has been a lot of discussion around the benefits of meditation. It took me many years to be able to quiet my mind enough to meditate. I currently meditate for 5-10 minutes at least one time a day. That may not be a long time but even 5 minutes goes a long way. Meditating helps me relax, understand and figure out things in life and definitely helps to relieve stress and for me that also means depression.
I prefer to meditate early in the morning before Zoe wakes up. Lately I have enjoyed meditating while in the shower. I just stand under the water, relax and breath deep. Even though I try to focus on my breathing, I also meditate while I am out for a run. My body may not be totally relaxed but being outdoors and taking in the air calms my mind.
Sometimes I focus on one thought or quote and repeat it in my head. Three of my favorites:
“Thank You Lord For What You’ve Done For Me” – from one of my favorite gospel songs
“Be The Change You Wish To See In The World” – attributed to Ghandi
“Do What You Love, Love What You Do” – Anyone know who coined this phrase? One of my favorite bloggers and businesswomen embraces “Do What You Love” so I am giving credit to her. Thanks Renae.
Here are some simple tips that worked for me to getting started on your meditation journey:
1. Choose the time of day when you are most relaxed. First thing in the morning, late at night, when the little ones just fall asleep and you breath a sigh of relief. You get the point.
2. Don’t think of meditation as a required length of time. IT IS NOT! If you can only do one minute, start with it.
3. There is no hard rule to meditating. Everyone’s experience is different. Find what works for you.
4. If nothing else just take deep breaths and be still.
5. Thank yourself.
